I believe the "mob scene" is the Spanish Steps. A tourist mecca always
packed with people, mostly young folks.

We encountered two mob scenes, one at the Trevi Fountain (where the
one man band was), and a smaller one at the Spanish steps. There
seemed not to be a rational reason for either of them.

I guess you get the mob scene at the Trevi fountain because everyone wants
to see where Anita Ekberg took a dip, or wants to throw in a coin with the
hope of returning to Rome (worked for me!). At the Spanish Steps, I'd guess
because to get there is inevitably a long walk from anywhere else!
